Dad in protest suicide

Monday, May 28, 2012

A core supporter of the Tiananmen Mothers has killed himself, just days before the 23rd anniversary of his son's death.

The Tiananmen Mothers was formed by grieving women who lost sons and daughters in the crackdown, but they later admitted as honorary members fathers who had also lost their children.

The group last night issued an obituary for the 73-year-old Zha Weilin, father of Zha Aiguo.

It said Zha, who hung himself in the garage of his house, will be buried in his hometown of Tianjin.

A note that Zha left explained he was offering his life to protest at the fact that his son and others have not been vindicated more than 20 years after the incident.

"He and his wife joined all forms of protest movements without any regret," the obituary read.

Zha is survived by his wife and another son. PHILA SIU
