Chen supporters play cat and mouse

Wednesday, May 02, 2012

Chen Guangcheng's escape from house arrest has set off a cat-and-mouse conflict - this time on the internet between censors and netizens.

Admirers have been rushing to popular social media platforms to cheer the blind activist on but censors have picked up their trail and are blocking searches for key names, words and phrases.

Some of those terms are obvious - Chen's name, blind man, American embassy, and Dongshigu and Linyi, the names of Chen's home village and the city nearby.

But users have also been continuously coming up with new terms to stay ahead.

These include A Bing, a popular blind folk musician, and Shawshank Redemption and The Great Escape, books about escapes that have been turned into movies.
