Two to face court over waterworks bribes

Tuesday, August 21, 2012

Two directors of an engineering firm are due to appear in court tomorrow, charged with offering nearly HK$1 million in bribes involving a Water Supplies Department project.

The Independent Commission Against Corruption said yesterday that Stephen Au Yeung Ching-cheong and Eric Choi Chun-wai, both 58 and directors of Sunshine Traffic Engineering and Contractors, are jointly charged with one count of conspiracy to offer advantages to an agent.

Their company was subcontracted to replace waterworks in the New Territories by China National Chemical Engineering Hongkong, which had won a HK$163 million maintenance contract from the Water Supplies department in 2007.

The ICAC alleges that between July 2007 and January 2011, Au Yeung and Choi conspired with the main contractor's assistant project manager for them to offer monthly payments of HK$30,000 in return for favors related to the project.

An investigation revealed the alleged monthly bribes totaled HK$990,000.

The two are to appear in Tuen Mun Magistracy, then transferred to the District Court for plea. STAFF REPORTER
