Bad show, Lady Gaga

Monday, May 07, 2012

I had no choice but to leave midway through Lady Gaga's show on Wednesday after her insulting remarks about Hong Kong.

Her flippant claims - both on Twitter and during the show - that our streets are lined with fake Birkins are not only incorrect but defamatory.

Counterfeit merchandise appears in all cities and to imply that Hong Kong is a purveyor of fakes is irresponsible.

She may thinly disguise this as freedom of expression or simply a cheap joke in the hope of getting a few laughs.

However freedom of expression entails wisdom, knowledge and respect.

To show a complete lack of respect to another city and its people is simply unacceptable. Not only do her cries of "I love Hong Kong" ring exceptionally hollow but her claim to be a fighter for equality, freedom and the breaking down of prejudice is equally unconvincing.

She should apologize to Hong Kong or simply - as she most likely will - continue to hide in her castle of arrogance and hypocrisy and be a phony like the fake Birkins she keeps talking about. Justin Yau
