World of Discovery
For students worried about the untested Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education, there is always the International Baccalaureate option. But IB programs have traditionally been the bastion of international schools or English Schools Foundation institutions and there is a long waiting list.

Applying to Ontario through OUAC
Ontario is the core of English-speaking Canada. It is home to some 40 public and private universities, five of which are located in metropolitan Toronto. The largest of them, the University of Toronto, is a leader in research and a gathering place for intellectuals.

Journey beyond BC
Last November there was a Canadian education fair here in Hong Kong. Among the 18 schools that came to strut their stuff were a few from BC that I didn't mention last week. So here's a shout-out to them: Kwantlen Polytechnic, Thompson Rivers and the University of Northern British Columbia. The latter two are quite a bit away from Vancouver.

China in your hand
We may have one country, two education systems but the gap is narrowing. As part of a pilot project this year, 63 universities across the border will exempt Hong Kong students from taking the Joint Entrance Examination for universities in the mainland.

West Side Story
In Canada there are unfortunately no systems in place to merge application forms or streamline procedures even within the same province (except in Ontario, which we'll look at in a later week). This means for each school that you consider you'll have to read a separate set of instructions, fill out your profile once, and make sure a copy of all accompanying documents be delivered on time.

With just one click
The delighted look on Wu Lok-yan's face said it all. The 18-year-old from St Francis of Assisi's College was registering for the Education Bureau's Electronic Advance Application System for Post-secondary Programmes - or E-App for short. "It's so simple to use," she said.

Considering cold Canada
Across the pond from the British Isles is Canada and there are reasons to think about attending university there. So, even though asking "Why Canada?" is as cliche as can be, let's answer the question before deciding to submit a form.
