Light to cook by
Lighting is often described as the jewelry of the home. But it is more critical than that, especially in kitchens, where it is all about slicing, dicing and reading recipes.

Drink to that
If you're looking for a conversation piece that is also practical, French brand OA (Orfevrerie d'Anjou) is now available in Hong Kong. The luxury pewtersmith is known for its custom-made champagne buckets and other accessories.

Disguising the negative
Just about every home has an eyesore. It grates on your nerves, but fixing or replacing it is too expensive, too impractical or too far down the priority list. Still, that doesn't mean you have to look the other way.

Proper setting
Architect Tom Kundig believes in fitting his houses to their surroundings. He said: "I don't think that I could ever design something as beautiful as what's already out there. We're here to frame the landscape, to create an experience of that place, and perhaps to bring some of that experience - the intimacy, the vulnerability - inside the house."

Cave in to comfort
Move over, man cave. Make way for the woman cave? The craft den? Interior designer Michelle Mio says that more of her female clients are staking out a room or nook in their home just for them.

Dorm style by the book
The first real test for most college students isn't in the classroom. It's figuring out how to turn those cramped dorm rooms into something they can call home.

Rugs to niches
Area rugs bring in warmth during the winter, protecting feet from frigid floors and creating a cozy look in a room. But placing the right rug in the right room can be a puzzle: how much of the furniture should be on top? And can a stylish small rug be the right scale for a large space?

Doctor's orders
Even if homeowners can't afford to spend big bucks on lavish redecorating projects, that doesn't mean the home- improvement bug has to quit biting, said interior designer Debbie Sheaf. She and her business partner, Pamela Doerr, have reinvented themselves as the "Doctors of Design." They've even taken to wearing white lab coats when making house calls.

Manager's pick
If you had an entire interior design showroom at your disposal, what would you go for? Manager Simon Wong Kin-yip, below, who has been working at home decoration store ViA for close to five years, has some recommendations:

Scratching the surface
Bone china is great for formal parties but for everyday use earthenware does have its charms. Eco-chic store tree has brought in a new ceramic collection by Sydney-based designer Dimity Kidston just in time for spring.

Shoe-in question
Shoes on or off indoors? "People have really passionate views about this," said Noelle Howey, deputy editor at Real Simple magazine. "Some people feel very offended if they're asked to take off their shoes. Other people are equally offended if a guest balks at the request."
