Kyoto's two worlds
The earthquake in March 2011 has my thoughts going out these days to a completely different image - to Kyoto, a place that embodies everything I love about Japan. Serene, ancient beauty mixed with already-tomorrow modernity. It is far from the death and danger hundreds of kilometers to the north.

The Kawa Karpo Kora
Straddling the border between Yunnan and Tibet sits one of the Buddhist world's most holy mountains - Kawa Karpo, or "white pillar" in Tibetan. It's never been climbed (being worshipped as a deity) and remains a remnant and icon of the ancient bon religion; an animistic tradition based on the concept of a world pervaded by good and evil spirits that inhabit forests, rivers and mountains.
