Taiwan has formed a special airborne unit capable of scrambling to the contested Spratly islands in just hours as tensions in the South China Sea mount.

Taiwan lawmakers have urged China to disclose how many of the island's people are languishing in its jails, calling on Beijing to open up its prisons for inspection by human rights groups.

Tokyo draws in cash to buy disputed islands
Tokyo has raised about 76 million yen (HK$7.35 million) in donations to buy a small chain of disputed islands, the city's government said yesterday, after its controversial governor announced the planned purchase last month.
