Enforce the rules now to win back trust in banking
If the past few weeks are any indication, hubris, deception and amorality seem to permeate the financial services industry.

Dirty details mean HSBC cannot afford any more mistakes as probes loom
The money-laundering probe has put HSBC Holdings in the penalty box. US Senate revelations about the bank's "perversely polluted" approach to handling suspect cash have tarnished its status as a crisis survivor.

Losing wonderful world
So lonesome George the Pinta Island tortoise has gone the way of the dodo, extinct. What will be next? Our own white dolphin suffering from never-ending reclamation projects?

On shaky grounds
In comments about a survey showing that Hongkongers prefer to marry foreign partners over locals ("Still in love with expats," The Standard, July 10), CUHK professor Wong Chak is quoted as saying: "This is not an act of admiring the West. Hongkongers do not admire South America, Africa or Eastern Europe. We only admire the richer Western countries."

Give Leung a chance
Feeling let down by CY Leung? Why? Probably 80 percent of the population have some kind of illegal structure in their homes but does it affect their workplace?

Setting a bad precedent
While I agree that Lam Woon-kwong is a good choice as Executive Council convener, I do not agree that he should concurrently hold the post of EOC chairman.

Clearing the air on runway probe
Airport Authority Hong Kong recently submitted further information for the project profile of Hong Kong International Airport's proposed expansion to a three-runway system.

Intrigued by integrity
I've read JS Lam's Policing the Times article on the establishment of the ICAC. It said the ICAC was also staffed by transferees from the police and that those officers may have been involved in corrupt practices being investigated by the ICAC.

Filial piety the correct term
I am writing in response to Gloria Yu's article "Time to picture the art of giving,"(The Standard, May 31). Gloria stated that there is no English counterpart to the term hao shun. Unfortunately, this is not correct.
