It is always easy to tell people following their own passion and build it up. However, it is hard to find someone who is specialized in helping youngsters to search and confirm their true passion and consolidate the profile. As an experienced profile builder and admissions counselor for more than a decade, let me reveal some tricky things about profile building.

1. Don’t trust the internet - With the internet, it’s not hard to find how previous people got admitted to elite universities. Remember, you aren’t the only one who is browsing the internet. Your competitors and admissions officers do too. Following those revealed method will definitely kill your application!
2. Don’t rely solely on your academic excellence - With the current trend of grade inflation, almost 95% applicants are having ‘perfect’ grades. It’s almost impossible for you to stand out from the crowd just by grades and standardized test scores.
3. Don’t over-estimate the word “passion” - “Passion” isn’t just a slogan for you to apply elite universities! You really need to prove that you have passion on what you are applying. You will need to prove that in several areas in order to complete your story, including academic aspect, extra-curricular aspect, social aspect, and more… The traditional way of nurturing your passion is no longer working!
4. Don’t add a personal project or a research paper without prior planning - There is no doubt that a personal project or a research paper experience can upgrade a profile. However, it will also kill a profile when there is no story to back up your move. Without prior planning and prove of interests, it is too artificial to the profile. That’s the reason why I always tell youngsters and parents to prep early to make the story smoother!
It’s not hard to find solutions for building a personal project and conducting a research paper. Before committing a solution, please try to ask yourself whether it align with what you have been doing in the past 2-3 years. If yes, that’s good to explore further. It not, it’s time for you to rethink whether a big project can really help you to boost your admissions chance!
Passion is a very complex subject and it requires detailed planning and preparation. When it combines with profile building, it is much harder to find a simple and easy way to make it perfect. Just an ultimate tip for you if you are also the one who would like to have a unique and competitive profile for your future, no matter for top universities or future life, build something SPECIAL but NOT COMMON!
