Hong Kong health officials confirmed two additional cases of chikungunya fever on October 25, raising the city’s 2025 total to 46 imported cases, as authorities urge travelers to remain cautious amid ongoing global outbreaks of the mosquito-borne disease.
The Centre for Health Protection announced today that the new cases involve a 74-year-old woman from Kowloon City District and a 72-year-old man from Shatin District, both of whom contracted the virus during recent trips to Foshan in Guangdong.
The woman, who traveled between October 3 and 13, began experiencing joint pain and a rash on October 20. She sought treatment at Kwong Wah Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department yesterday, where she was admitted for care in a mosquito-free environment.
Laboratory tests confirmed her infection, and she remains in stable condition.
Her household contact, who accompanied her to Foshan, shows no symptoms but is under medical observation.
Similarly, the man, who visited Foshan alone from October 10 to 23, developed fever, joint pain, and a rash on October 23.
He was admitted to Prince of Wales Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department yesterday for treatment in a mosquito-free setting, with tests confirming chikungunya.
He is also stable, and his household contact, currently asymptomatic, is being monitored. As both patients were in Guangdong during the virus’s incubation period, the cases are classified as imported.
The Centre for Health Protection is continuing its epidemiological investigations and has notified Guangdong health authorities.
This year, Hong Kong has recorded 46 confirmed chikungunya cases, all linked to overseas travel, with one fatality reported. The remaining cases have been mild.
